Do you dream of creating a space for teens where they can:

Be open and honest with no judgement,

Develop important life skills

& Completely embrace the person they truly are within?

Do you want to:

Empower them,

Help them feel like they are enough,

& Share what you’ve learned with them?

Then you, my friend, are in the right place!

We know you want to make a difference.  We know you want to help.

You know that this is what you’re meant to be doing.

You are drawn to working with youth.

You wish there were programs and mentors around to support you when you were a teen.

You believe in the power of self-development.

You are feeling a calling, more and more, to hold a space for teens, empower them and nurture them.

You are craving an opportunity to put your caring, giving spirit to use and tap into what you truly have to offer the world.

No matter your age, you have learned a thing or two and feel that it’s your duty to share this with the next generation.

You might even feel like everything has led you to this point (seemingly random jobs, those books you read, that course you took a while ago…it wasn’t for nothing!)

And you want to go on this next journey with support around you.

Perhaps you just need a bit of guidance.  A few TOOLS to make sure you create

something that will really serve the young people you’re hoping to reach.

We’d love to help you.

What exactly is covered?

Here’s a snapshot of some of the content we’ll cover in each module…

Want more detail?

MODULE 1: Your Why

In this module we explore what it means to be a Shine From Within Youth Mentor and start to look at the qualities of a youth mentor. We also dive into why you want to work with young people and what you specifically have to offer them. This could be the most important part of the entire course because it will set you up for the direction of your courses and workshops, the type of curriculum you decide to deliver, the content you include, who you decide to collaborate with, how you promote your events and more. It’s OK if you aren’t exactly sure on the specifics yet, the worksheets in this module will help you gain clarity.

Learning Outcomes:

● Have a clear understanding of what a Shine From Within Youth Mentor is and the qualities that we believe are important in a youth mentor

● Be able to explain why you want to work with youth

● Be able to identify your passions, strengths and the experiences that you have been through that could benefit your future students

MODULE 2: Duty of Care

In this module we will dive into the mind of a teen so that you have a clear understanding of where they’re at psychologically. We will look at the common issues that teens can be faced with today, the risk factors associated with these and the triggers that you can look out for as a youth mentor.  At the end of this module, you should feel comfortable holding a space for teens, knowing that you are prepared for what could come up in the sessions and how to handle these appropriately. You should also be able to start thinking about and researching your own workshop topics that combine your values, passions and purpose with what teens are faced with today.

Learning Outcomes:

● Have a basic understanding of the psychological developments that occur during the teen years

● Be aware of the common issues adolescents may face and the risk factors associated with these

● Be able to recognise triggers that will alert you to deeper issues so that you can refer students on to specialists if necessary

● Understand young people’s rights, your duty of care when holding a space for them and how to practically integrate this into your own work

● Be able to consider how your ‘why’ can be integrated with what teens are faced with in today’s world, to start bringing together research and workshop ideas.

MODULE 3: Engagement

In Module 3 we’re going to dive into how to authentically connect with young people.  At the end of this module, you should feel comfortable about the idea of getting up in front of a group of young people and introducing yourself. You will know how to lead them through some icebreaker activities, facilitate group discussions, guide and nurture the group through different stages. You’ll understand the different learning styles and personality types and how to deliver your content in a way that appeals to all of them.

Learning Outcomes:

● Be able to introduce yourself to a group of young people in an authentic way

● Understand how to use active listening and powerful questioning to facilitate group discussions

● Know how to guide and nurture a group through a rich learning experience

● Know some icebreaker games that you can use with your own classes to foster connection

● Understand how to cater to a range of different learning styles and personality types

MODULE 4: Workshops

As we move into the second half of the program, we’re really looking at the practical side of creating an experience for young people and the business elements that can bring the experience to life. Building on the first 3 modules, which were heavily based in developing your understanding of working with young people, Module 4 starts to piece together your workshop or program in a systematic way. We’ll dive into curriculum development and event management processes for different types of events and workshops, sharing our proven 6 stages to a smooth workshop. You’ll understand the flow of workshops and the importance of framing, sequencing and flexibility in your delivery.

We’re all about teamwork here so collaborations that are supportive and beneficial for both parties will be discussed and we’ll even share some of our outlines so that you can clearly see examples of how to get things done.

Learning Outcomes:

● Understand the differences, benefits and disadvantages between retreats, courses, workshops and other events

● Be able to identify teachers and collaborators who share your vision and can add value to your workshops

● Know what to look out for in selecting a venue

● Understand the flow of workshops and how to frame and sequence effectively

● Know our 6 stages to a smooth workshop from start to finish

● Be able to develop your own curriculum

● Have access to example done-for-you outlines and checklists

MODULE 5: Marketing

No matter how passionate you are about working with teens, if you can’t express that in an authentic way to the people who need you and actually get bookings, then this may not be the business for you. That’s not a bad thing, but you might be better off working for someone else and that’s a good thing to know right from the start (note: plenty of people come through this training with the intention to work for other organisations rather than build their own business – it’s still useful to be able to bring this knowledge and these skills to that organisation). When you are building your own business, which is what most of you are doing or are hoping to do, you need to wear a ridiculous amount of hats, including the marketing hat. If you want to create your own programs and workshops and have them sell out, then you NEED to know marketing.

Learning Outcomes:

● Have a basic understanding of marketing

● Know exactly who you are going to be marketing to

● Know our 3 most important rules for marketing in this space

● Be able to price your programs and courses

● Have a clear idea of all the various channels for marketing

● Understand a number of clear strategies to build a relationship with your potential students and their families and be able to select the most appropriate ones for you

● Know how to get into print media regularly without paying for advertising

● Know how to write a great sales page

MODULE 6: Business

The business stuff…this (like many of the other modules in this course) could be a course all on it’s own.  But we’re going to make sure we cover the specifics that you need to be aware of for working with youth AND share the tips and tricks to help you move into action.

This is all about getting started with the right foundations, easy checklists and procedures so that you can focus on delivering a beautiful experience the young folks who need you.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the requirements of getting started and running a business that works with youth

  • Get our Master Checklist with everything you need to do from start to finish with your events and workshops
  • Have access to our templates for bookings, terms and conditions, risk management plan and confirmation emails

Your Teachers

Amanda has been teaching and presenting to teens on and off for about 15 years, since she was a teen herself!  She’s built up an arsenal of qualifications over the years in business, events management, life coaching, youth mentoring, wellness, eating disorder prevention and more (and will keep on learning and sharing this with youth mentors! Current reading and training obsessions: feminism, gender and anti-racism).

Amanda worked for a number of training schools in her late teens and early twenties while at university but founded Shine From Within in 2012 after going through a 2 year battle with cancer.  It was this life-changing experience that inspired her to re-evaluate her own life and feel called to provide her own nurturing space for young people, to share some of the important lessons she had learned during that experience.  For the past 8 years, Amanda and her small team have been dedicated to educating and inspiring hundreds of teens to truly shine, inside and out.

Some of Shine From Within’s events have included Mother-Daughter Evenings and Retreats, Nourish Workshops, Back 2 School Workshops, School-based programs for primary and high schools, 5-day Personal Development courses and 8-week ‘night schools’ for teens, 2-day courses for tweens, Sisterhood Evenings, one-on-one mentoring (in person and via Skype/Zoom), being involved in youth camps and conferences and providing a range of workshops for not-for-profit community groups.

Amanda is a published author of Shine From Within; a teen’s guide to life (Hay House), has appeared on The Today Show (Channel 9) and Today Tonight (Channel 7), been mentioned as a ‘game-changer’ in The Collective magazine and has been featured in Peppermint Magazine, Cleo Magazine, Natural Health Magazine, The Australian, Inspired Coach Magazine and more.

Why I created this program

I LOVE working with teens.  But getting started on my own business with Shine From Within was tough.  I felt alone at times and craved support from someone in the same industry.  I reached out to a couple of women who I admired and looked up to in this industry but didn’t hear a response.

So when people started getting in touch with me after I had been building up Shine From Within for a few years, wanting to work with teens but unsure of where to start, wondering if they could do it and wanting to “pick my brain,” I just knew I had to find a way to support them.  I truly believe that there can never be enough programs or support in the world for young people.  If I can help you tap into your own values, strengths and passion to hold a space for teens that is uniquely yours, while also giving you all of the practical information I’ve learned along the way, then I’ve done my job.  It’s my dream to help more young people and I can’t do it without you – let’s help them together!

For Leah it took a cancer scare and infertility to realise the food she was eating and the products she was using were not serving her. But really the biggest thing she discovered was that her thoughts were not serving her. She now has a beautiful boy!

Leah is a much-loved support in the training – always there to offer additional resources, experience and connection for our community. We know you’ll fall in love with her!

Hear from some of our graduates…

(we’re so ridiculously proud of them!)

  • 2mins: her experience of signing up to the Youth Mentor Training
  • 2:39: “You took someone who was only being held back by my own imposter syndrome and worked to erode some of that and give me the confidence that I was doing the right thing…and taking what I learnt from the course and going, ‘right that’s how I should do it slightly differently…’
  • 3:59: “Girl Shaped Flames is the first thing in my life I have ever found that I couldn’t say ‘no’ to…it’s the most fulfilling thing I’ve done.”
  • 5.40: how the first module helped her get really clear on how she wanted to work with youth
  • 6:10: the range of ways the mentors work with youth and different formats
  • 7:35: the power of the facebook group and how she loves tapping into the community

“If you feel drawn to holding space for young girls in your coaching practice or community, trust the nudge that brought you here, to the Youth Mentor Training.  Amanda’s beautiful programme has helped me feel more confident in my ability to address ‘sticky’ topics in a way that feels deeply graceful and age-appropriate, leaving my focus on holding a space that is fiercely dedicated to self-discovery in a playful, fun and lighthearted way. I am so grateful to Amanda for creating this programme and sharing her wonderful knowledge with us all.”

Ashley Wheeler

“I loved all of the content!! It was clear that so much thought and love went into creating such a wonderful tangible product and each module has paired so wonderfully with the work that I’m doing with some of my students in individual counselling.  If you are thinking about enrolling in this program, I would say, ‘Go for it!’  You will walk away with a greater sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the needs of young people.”

Sabine McKenzie

“You will not regret participating in the Youth Mentor Training course. It solidified, and extended upon, knowledge I previously had and provided me with the insight I needed to pursue my passion to work with Teens. The guest teacher interviews provide myriads of useful information across a broad spectrum of relevant topics and Amanda’s worksheets spur action. I cannot wait to put what I’ve learnt out into the world and will forever be grateful for the wonderful people I’ve been able to learn from and work with in the group – thanks to Amanda.”

The Shine From Within Youth Mentor Training Program is right for you if:

  • You haven’t worked with youth before and would like to feel comfortable holding a space for them OR
  • You have worked with youth in another capacity but would love to branch out to run your own personalised workshops and programs OR
  • You work with adults already and would like to tailor your content to suit adolescents
  • You are a kind soul, genuinely interested in supporting young people to be the best version of themselves
  • You realise the great responsibility that comes with working with young people and are eager to ensure you do this the right way
  • You have an open heart and willingness to learn new things, despite the qualifications you already have
  • You believe in investing in your own personal development, growth and self-care
  • You may feel a little scared but are willing to give this all you’ve got and put in the work

The Shine From Within Youth Mentor Training Program is not right for you if:

  • You are not willing to put in the work and devote at least 2 hours per week to your studies and be on group coaching calls where possible to be the best youth mentor that you can be
  • You want to support youth with serious health/mental health issues beyond the preventative space – you will need to invest much more time and money into a university degree for this
  • You do not have patience for young people
  • You already feel like you have a high level of skills and knowledge when it comes to mentoring youth and growing a business
  • You are looking for detailed scripts to run Shine From Within programs – this course will give you the tools to create your own content.
  • You just want a platform to talk, air your problems and share your views and opinions with young people (without considering their needs or providing a space for them to grow and develop).

Why is this work so important?

Body image is one of the top three personal concerns of young people aged 15-19 in Australia*

About 20% of teens will experience depression before adulthood in the United States

Coping with stress is the number one personal concern for young people in Australia, alongside school or study problems.  Young women in particular are increasingly overwhelmed with more than half saying they are either extremely or very concerned about coping with stress*

*Mission Australia Annual Youth Survey 2014

Young people are struggling like never before, especially during these unsettling times.  As they try to find themselves and carve out their unique identity and place in the world they are faced with more scrutinising and comparisitis than ever before.  They have endless information and inspiration at their finger tips – they are connected yes, but can often be deeply disconnected from themselves, the people around them and the environment.  They can snapchat you in a heartbeat but can’t introduce themselves.  They are growing up in an age when their online identity can sometimes feel more important than their ‘real life’ identity.

Now is the time for more support, connection and mentors to step up for these young people to turn to.  Now is the time for us to create spaces and experiences for young women to connect in person and develop important life skills.  Now is the time for the village to come together to help support the child.

“All of us have the ability to come into a room and to be an unwavering pillar of belief for a group of young people…that’s something we can choose for ourselves right before we step into a room and that alone, is a really powerful thing for a young person,”  Jo Parker [Guest Teacher]

Can I study the Shine From Within Youth Mentor Training online?

Yes!  The entire course is delivered online, with optional in-person training days and retreats, which are often filmed and shared with all youth mentors.

Is it compulsory to be on the live group coaching calls?

No.  The group coaching calls will be recorded in case you can’t attend them live.

When does the course actually start?

Module 1 will be released on Tuesday 2nd June 2020.  Every 2 weeks a new module will be released and there will be a implementation/catch-up break half way through. You can download the complete schedule here.

What are the in-person events and what if I can’t attend them?

The in-person mastermind events and retreats are optional, are open to all youth mentors (not just the current cohort) and are scheduled throughout the year.  They are not specific to your cohort and are completely separate to the Youth Mentor Training.  We’ll let you know as soon we have one scheduled in for 2020.

Do the training days and retreats cost money to attend?

Yes, we charge for any in-person events so that we don’t need to incorporate the cost of these days into the overall price of the training.

Will I be able to run Shine From Within programs at the end of the Youth Mentor Training?

No.  This course will provide you with the tools and knowledge to create your own wonderful programs.   A licensing program for people wanting to run Shine From Within programs, with all of our content, scripts, outlines, teacher tools, etc is in development and, at this stage, will be by invite-only to people who have completed this Youth Mentor Training and stand out.  We try to be super generous though and you do receive lots of examples, to create your own!

I’m afraid that I’m too old or too young to work with young people.  Is there an age-limit for your course?

No there is no age limit.  We have met incredible youth presenters in their 60’s and incredible youth presenters in their early 20’s.  Both have wonderful advantages and we’ll help you hone in on authentic ways for you to personally connect with your students.  So far our youth mentors range in age from 16 – 65.

Do you have a refund policy?

Yes! We have a 30 Day Refund policy, which means you can do the first 2 modules and if you find that this is not what you signed up for and you can prove you’ve done all the work, we’ll gladly refund your money, less a $200 administration fee.  In order to receive a refund, you will need to submit proof of completing the work and your worksheets within this 30 day period for our assessment.  Once this 30 day period has passed, there will be no refunds issued.  The 30 Day period begins when Module 1 is released, so even if you start making payments in advanced with one of our extended payment plans, you will still be able to receive a full refund, minus the AUD$200 administration fee, up to 30 days into the course content.

How much money can I make doing this work?

This is totally dependent on you, how you like to work, the youth you want to work with, the type of events you decide to create and how much time you want to devote to growing your business.  You can absolutely make money doing this and you should (otherwise you won’t be doing it for long and the students who need you won’t have anyone there to help them).  Shine From Within is a six-figure business.  To give you an example and show you the scope, we charge $12 for a place at our Sisterhood Evenings and $1180 for a place in one of our week-long courses. There’s usually at least one student in these week-long courses that’s come along on a scholarship or been supported through a community organisation. The more you get into this space, the more you realise how many ways you can get paid – you can support students at risk while still ensuring you can feed your family. Sometimes we run free programs for local charity organisations working with youth.  We offer such a variety because it’s important to us to be inclusive and offer something for everyone.  One of our guest teachers charges $10,000 every time he speaks in a school (note: this is not the going rate to speak in a school so please don’t expect this for yourself straight up!) – the sky is the limit and it all depends on YOU.  One thing is for sure, it does take dedication, time and work so if you’re willing to dive into this head-first, have patience (it takes time to build trust in your community and grow your business) and give it all you’ve got then I have no doubt you’ll achieve whatever you want to achieve (whether that’s a side-hustle or a fully-fledged empire!). Every community and every person is so different so, once again, it’s completely up to you.  If you’re after a ‘get rich quick’ scheme, this is not the course for you.

I’m a school teacher and want to run your programs in our classroom.  Is this for me?

Probably not.  This is not a school-based curriculum where you purchase the program and deliver it word-for-word in your school.  If that’s what you’re looking for, let us know. We’ve got something else for you. We’ve had quite a few school teachers enrol in this program anyway as they are passionate about creating their own programs to run on the side, want to get out of the education system and work on their own (or even want to create a program to run in their school). A couple of schools have even paid for the training for their teachers.

How many hours do I need to devote to my studies?

Approximately 2 – 5 hours of study per week is required to watch all of the training videos, complete the readings and do the worksheets.

I’m really busy and am afraid I’ll get behind in my studies.  Should I wait and book in later?

As this is a self-study course you are welcome to complete the course at your own pace.  You will of course get the most benefit out of the program by keeping up with the modules as best you can so that you can ask relevant questions and get extra support during the coaching calls as we’re going along.  You are not required to submit homework so it’s up to you to make the most of the training.  There is also an ‘implementation period’ half way through the program to catch up and start to implement some of your learnings (and enjoy some time off over the New Year period).  As you have access to this program for the lifetime of the course, we welcome you joining us to re-do the course every time it opens up for enrolments so if you get behind, we’ll happily keep you accountable to go through it a second time or third time!

What kind of certification will I have at the end?

You’ll receive a certificate in the mail once the course is completed highlighting that you’ve graduated from the Youth Mentor Training (including 60+ hours of training). If you’re a life coach, this certificate can be recognised by the International Coach Federation (ICF) as hours towards credential renewal in the area of Resource Development. You’ll be able to say you’re a Shine from Within Youth Mentor, graduated Youth Mentor, or similar.

I’d love to do this training but am not in a position to afford it. Do you offer any financial support or scholarships?

We are committed to making this training accessible and provide a Pay What You Can application process for those who are not in a position to afford the full rate and/or hold a marginalised identity.  There are a limited number of places available for each round and you can complete the application form here. We don’t ask you to share specifics about your identity or circumstances but encourage to share whatever you feel is relevant. You then nominate how much you can afford to pay between a minimum and maximum amount. Historically these places have been given to those in developing countries or people with a marginalised identity. Given the current state of the global economy, we’re offering additional places for this 2020 round so encourage you to apply if finances are holding you back.

Do you hold a safe and inclusive space?

Yes this is one of our highest values and intentions. We have robust community guidelines in place to ensure minimum harm is done and ensure that everyone feels welcome. You can read a little about this on our commitment page. If you’d also like to see our community guidelines, please email youthmentors@shinefromwithin.com.au

“I always knew I wanted to work with youth, to be some sort of mentor, I just didn’t know a program like this existed.

That’s where I feel very fortunate to have found this program on the 11th hour (!!) before closing and took a leap of faith.

If I could write a letter to myself (12months ago) I would be writing about the amazing transformation that she was about to encounter and how when she finished this course not only would she have a wealth of knowledge, confidence and sense of empowerment to do the thing she has always dreamed of but she would also become part of a bigger family and create life time friendships with an abundance of support.”
