Do you dream of creating a space for girls where they can:

Be open and honest with no judgement,

Modules - latest

Want more detail?

MODULE 1: Your Why

In this module we explore what it means to be a Shine From Within Youth Mentor and start to look at the qualities of a youth mentor. We will also dive into why you want to work with young people and what you specifically have to offer them. This could be the most important part of the entire course because it will set you up for the direction of your courses and workshops, the type of curriculum you decide to deliver, the content you include, who you decide to collaborate with, how you promote your events and more. It’s OK if you aren’t exactly sure on the specifics yet, the worksheets in this module will help you gain clarity.

Learning Outcomes:

● Have a clear understanding of what a Shine From Within Youth Mentor is and the qualities that we believe are important in a youth mentor

● Be able to explain why you want to work with youth

● Be able to identify your passions, strengths and the experiences that you have been through that could benefit your future students

MODULE 2: Duty of Care

In this module we will dive into the mind of a teen so that you have a clear understanding of where they’re at psychologically. We will look at the common issues that teens can be faced with today, the risk factors associated with these and the triggers that you can look out for as a youth mentor.  At the end of this module, you should feel comfortable holding a space for teens, knowing that you are prepared for what could come up in the sessions and how to handle these appropriately. You should also be able to start thinking about and researching your own workshop topics that combine your values, passions and purpose with what teens are faced with today.

Learning Outcomes:

● Have a basic understanding of the psychological developments that occur during the teen years

● Be aware of the common issues adolescents may face and the risk factors associated with these

● Be able to recognise triggers that will alert you to deeper issues so that you can refer students on to specialists if necessary

● Understand young people’s rights, your duty of care when holding a space for them and how to practically integrate this into your own work

● Be able to consider how your ‘why’ can be integrated with what teens are faced with in today’s world, to start bringing together research and workshop ideas.

MODULE 3: Engagement

In Module 3 we’re going to dive into how to authentically connect with young people.  At the end of this module, you should feel comfortable about the idea of getting up in front of a group of young people and introducing yourself. You will know how to lead them through some icebreaker activities, facilitate group discussions, guide and nurture the group through different stages. You’ll understand the different learning styles and personality types and how to deliver your content in a way that appeals to all of them.

Learning Outcomes:

● Be able to introduce yourself to a group of young people in an authentic way

● Understand how to use active listening and powerful questioning to facilitate group discussions

● Understand how to cater to a range of different learning styles and personality types

MODULE 4: Workshops

As we move into the second half of the program, we’re really looking at the practical side of creating an experience for young people and the business elements that can bring the experience to life. Building on the first 3 modules, which were heavily based in developing your understanding of working with young people, Module 4 starts to piece together your workshop or program in a systematic way. We’ll dive into curriculum development and event management processes for different types of events and workshops, sharing our proven 6 stages to a smooth workshop. You’ll understand the flow of workshops and the importance of framing, sequencing and flexibility in your delivery.

We’re all about teamwork here so collaborations that are supportive and beneficial for both parties will be discussed and we’ll even share some of our outlines so that you can clearly see examples of how to get things done.

● Be able to identify teachers and collaborators who share your vision and can add value to your workshops

● Know our 6 stages to a smooth workshop from start to finish

● Be able to develop your own curriculum

● Have access to example done-for-you outlines and checklists

MODULE 5: Marketing

No matter how passionate you are about working with teen girls, if you can’t express that in an authentic way to the people who need you and actually get bookings, then this may not be the business for you. That’s not a bad thing, but you might be better off working for someone else and that’s a good thing to know right from the start. When you are building your own business, which is what most of you are doing or are hoping to do, you need to wear a ridiculous amount of hats, including the marketing hat. If you want to create your own programs and workshops and have them sell out, then you NEED to know marketing.

Your Teachers:

IMG_2065 - Version 2Amanda has been teaching and presenting to teen girls on and off for over 12 years, since she was a teen herself!  She’s built up an arsenal of qualifications over the years in business, events management, life coaching, youth mentoring, wellness, eating disorder prevention and more.

Amanda worked for a number of training schools in her late teens and early twenties but founded Shine From Within in 2012 after going through a 2 year battle with cancer.  It was this life-changing experience that inspired her to re-evaluate her own life and feel called to provide her own nurturing space for young women and share some of the important lessons she had learned during that experience.  For the past 4 years, Amanda and her small team have been dedicated to educating and inspiring hundreds of teen girls to truly shine, inside and out.

Some of Shine From Within’s events have included Mother-Daughter Evenings, Nourish Workshops, Back 2 School Workshops, School-based programs for primary and high schools, 5-day Personal Development courses and 8-week ‘night schools’ for teens, 2-day courses for tweens, Sisterhood Evenings, one-on-one mentoring (in person and via Skype), being involved in youth camps and conferences and providing a range of workshops for not-for-profit community groups.

Amanda has appeared on The Today Show (Channel 9) and Today Tonight (Channel 7), been mentioned as a ‘game-changer’ in The Collective magazine and is a regular columnist for Nature & Health Magazine and Profile Magazine.  Amanda and her programs have been featured in Peppermint Magazine, Wellspring, Cleo Magazine, Natural Health Magazine, The Australian, The Courier Mail, Lorna Jane’s Sporty Sister of the Week, Inspired Coach Magazine and more.  She’s currently writing a book for teen girls that will be published by Hay House in 2017.

I LOVE working with teen girls.  But getting started on my own business with Shine From Within was tough.  I felt alone at times and craved support from someone in the same industry.  I reached out to a couple of women who I admired and looked up to in this industry but didn’t hear a response.

So when women started getting in touch with me wanting to work with teens but unsure of where to start, wondering if they could do it and wanting to “pick my brain,” I just knew I had to find a way to support them.  I truly believe that there can never be enough programs or support in the world for young women.  If I can help you tap into your own values, strengths and passion to hold a space for teens that is uniquely yours, while also giving you all of the practical information I’ve learned along the way, then I will feel so proud.  It’s my dream to help more girls and I can’t do it without you – let’s help more girls together!

Yvette Luciano

“Amanda Rootsey is a light beam who is guiding young women to step up and shine from within.  A true joy to work with and witness light up the lives of all beings who cross her path.  Mandy is the most gentle, humble and loving soul I’ve ever met.”

I am a visual person so watching/reading/hearing you was perfect.”

I keep referring back to them and have found them to be a truly indispensable guide in these early stages. I feel like I’m constantly thanking you – but seriously, THANK YOU!!!!”

Youth Mentor + Physiotherapist [Perth, WA]

Renee Bell

“I started this course, having seen and felt the vision I had for Little Girls with Great Big Dreams (about 2 years ago now) but still with no idea where to take it… I knew that even if I didn’t follow the path of being a Youth Mentor in a traditional sense that the course would help me some how and in some way as a parent.  And that it did, particularly a few little things right at the start re the teen brain and the way they learn/experience really resonated with me.  So I wanted to say a big huge thanks to you Amanda for putting this course out to the universe, and for all the amazing resources you have brought together into the one place. The member’s portal is a treasure trove of information, resources and inspiration and I still have so much to explore in there!  It has helped me incredibly as a parent to understand how my daughter is growing and developing, and also to look back and consider how hard some things may have been for me at that time, and what could possibly have helped.  My daughter and I are now busily preparing our first workshop for teen girls!”

  • You want to support youth with serious health/mental health issues – you will need to invest much more time and money into a university degree for this
  • You do not have patience for young people
  • You already feel like you have a high level of skills and knowledge when it comes to working with youth and growing a business
  • You are looking for detailed scripts to run Shine From Within programs – this course will give you the tools to create your own content.  A licensing program with all of our curriculum content is being developed and will be by invite-only to graduates of this course who really stand out as great representatives of Shine From Within.
  • You just want a platform to talk, air your problems and share your views and opinions with young girls (without considering their needs or providing a space for them to grow and develop).

Why is this work so important?

Body image is one of the top three personal concerns of young people aged 15-19 in Australia*

About 20% of teens will experience depression before adulthood in the United States

Coping with stress is the number one personal concern for young people in Australia, alongside school or study problems.  Young women in particular are increasingly overwhelmed with more than half saying they are either extremely or very concerned about coping with stress*

*Mission Australia Annual Youth Survey 2014

Young women are struggling like never before.  As they try to find themselves and carve out their unique identity and place in the world they are faced with more scrutinising and comparisitis than ever before.  They have endless information and inspiration at their finger tips – they are connected yes, but can often be deeply disconnected from themselves, the people around them and the environment.  They can snapchat you in a heartbeat but can’t introduce themselves.  They are growing up in an age when their online identity can sometimes feel more important than their ‘real life’ identity.

Now is the time for more support, connection and mentors to step up for these young people to turn to.  Now is the time for us to create spaces and experiences for young women to connect in person and develop important life skills.  Now is the time for the village to come together to help support the child.

“All of us have the ability to come into a room and to be an unwavering pillar of belief for a group of young people…that’s something we can choose for ourselves right before we step into a room and that alone, is a really powerful thing for a young person,”  Jo Parker [Guest Teacher]

Can I study the Shine From Within Youth Mentor Training online?

Yes!  The entire course is delivered online, with optional in-person training days.

Is it compulsory to be on the live group coaching calls?

No.  The group coaching calls will be recorded in case you can’t attend them live.

When does the course actually start?

Module 1 will be released on June 1st 2017.  Every 2 weeks a new module will be released, including a 2-week implementation period in the middle.

When are the in-person training days?

The in-person mastermind and training events are optional, are open to all youth mentors (not just the current cohort) and are scheduled throughout the year.  We always have 2 available dates during each intake and they are held in different capital cities around Australia, depending on where most of our current students are from.  We try to make it as easy as possible to attend and have filmed most of them for other students to watch later.  You will be advised of dates and venues once the course commences.

Do the training days cost money to attend?

Yes, we charge for the in-person training days (usually a fee of around $70) so that we don’t need to incorporate the cost of these days into the overall price of the training.

Will I be able to run Shine From Within programs at the end of the Youth Mentor Training?

No.  This course will provide you with the tools and knowledge to create your own wonderful programs.   A licensing program for people wanting to run Shine From Within programs, with all of our content, scripts, outlines, teacher tools, etc is in development and, at this stage, will be by invite-only to people who have completed this Youth Mentor Training and stand out.

I’m afraid that I’m too old or too young to work with young people.  Is there an age-limit for your course?

No there is no age limit.  We have met incredible youth presenters in their 60’s and incredible youth presenters in their early 20’s.  Both have wonderful advantages and we’ll help you hone in on authentic ways for you to personally connect with your students.

Do you have a refund policy?

Yes! We have a 30 Day Refund policy, which means you can do the first 2 modules and if you find that this is not what you signed up for and you can prove you’ve done all the work, we’ll gladly refund your money, less a $200 administration fee.  In order to receive a refund, you will need to submit proof of completing the work and your worksheets within this 30 day period for our assessment.  Once this 30 day period has passed, there will be no refunds issued.

How much money can I make doing this work?

This is totally dependent on you, how you like to work, the girls you want to work with, the type of events you decide to create and how much time you want to devote to growing your business.  We charge $12 for a place at our Sisterhood Evenings and $1180 for a place in one of our week-long courses.

I’m a school teacher and want to run your programs in our classroom.  Is this for me?

Probably not.  This is not a school-based curriculum but we’ve realised through the process of developing this training program that it’s something we need to create.  Hang tight and please stay in touch – we’ll get something together over the next 12 months or so.  We’ve had some school teachers enrol in this program anyway as they are passionate about creating their own programs to run on the side (and even in their school).

I’m really busy and am afraid I’ll get behind in my studies.  Should I wait and book in later?

As this is a self-study course you are welcome to complete the course at your own pace.  You will of course get the most benefit out of the program by keeping up with the modules as best you can so that you can ask relevant questions and get extra support during the coaching calls as we’re going along.  You are not required to submit homework so it’s up to you to make the most of the training.  There is also an ‘implementation period’ half way through the program to catch up and start to implement some of your learnings.  As you have access to this program for the lifetime of the course, we welcome you joining us to re-do the course every time it opens up for enrolments.
